Jerry Joe Boyd, 79, of Lawrence, Kansas passed peacefully at home surrounded by his immediate family on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 60 plus years, Phyllis, of the home. Other survivors include his daughter, Teri Boyd and son in-law, Dennis Abbott of Lawrence, KS; his son, Jeffrey Boyd (Barbara) of Tecumseh, KS; granddaughters, Natasha Karlin (Ashland) of Lawrence, KS, Courtney Jones (Michael) of Lyndon, KS and Jessica Boyd (Jake Trabert) of Olathe, KS.

Jerry has one great grandchild, Madelyn Kate Jones of Lyndon, KS and one great grandchild on the way.

Other survivors include his sisters all of Kansas City, KS, Diane Siscoe (Don), Karen Bowling (Bob), Martha Adam, Paula Mills (Mike), Teresa Boyd (John Langford), Mary Greenlee (Dennis) and Shelly Burnett (John). His nephew, Paul Boyd, of Tonganoxie, Kansas was like a son to him.

Jerry was born September 21, 1943 in Topeka, Kansas to Betty Doris Asher and Joseph Boyd. They are both deceased. Jerry’s only brother, Joseph “Jody” Paul Boyd preceded him in death. He attended Seaman Schools his entire life.

Jerry was a truck driver for Santa Fe for 14 years. He earned many safety awards during his tenure with Santa Fe.

In 1984, Phyllis, Jerry “Ace” and their son opened Ace Pawn and Gun. They went on to expand to two successful stores before Jerry formally retired. His son now owns and operates their only store.

Jerry was co-crew chief of his daughters NHRA Super Comp drag racing team from 2008-2016. He often said those were the best times of his life. He was a former drag racer for many years and raced B Gassers. He always had the fastest car at the strip and won many trophies.

Jerry was a self-made successful businessman and there was nothing he couldn’t do. He was a jack of all trades and master of ALL. His colorful character and magnetic personality made him one of a kind.

Jerry will lie in state from 12:00pm- 5:00pm on Friday, January 13, 2023 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home. A Celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66604. His family will greet friends and relatives 30 minutes prior to the service. Cremation will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Jerry’s honor to the window fund at Tecumseh United Methodist Church, Po Box 5, Tecumseh, KS 66542.
