Kay F. Grant

Kay Frances Grant, 83, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

She was born December 24, 1942, in Amarillo, Texas, the daughter of James and Frances (Griffin) Cushman. She was a 1961 graduate of Neosho (Missouri) High School and received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Missouri in 1965.

Kay was paraprofessional for West Avondale Elementary School, where she was also an active member and former President of the PTA. She also was a long-time volunteer for the Salvation Army in Topeka, running their winter coat giveaway for several years.

She was a member and past Chapter President of Delta Theta Chi Sorority.

Kay married Robert C. “Bob” Grant on September 5, 1964, in Neosho, Missouri. He survives in Topeka. Other survivors include her son, Matthew J. Grant of Berkeley, CA; and her granddaughter, Freya Allersma.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Claude D. Grant on November 20, 2000; and her sister, Ollie Barton.

Kay loved her family and serving her community. She also enjoyed bird watching, gardening, crochet, trying new foods, and caring for needy animals. She was a kind neighbor, a generous volunteer of her time and energy, and rarely left an interaction with another person without making a lasting impression.

Honoring her request, cremation is planned. Only private services are planned at this time. Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions in Topeka is assisting the family.
