Connie Kay Thomas

Connie K. Thomas, 80, of Hillsboro, Missouri, formerly of Pueblo West, Colorado, passed away on September 24, 2026, surrounded by loved ones. 

Born on July 21, 1946, in Topeka, Kansas, Connie was known for her deep love of the Lord, her determination, and her generous heart. Connie spent many years building a diverse and meaningful career. She worked for Birkenstock in California, served as a Fundraising Coordinator for a political organization, and later continued her fundraising work with the Topeka Blood Bank. She also worked as an Administrative Assistant at First United Methodist Church and at The Retired Enlisted Association. In every role, Connie was respected for her dedication, her compassion, and her ability to bring people together. Outside of work, Connie loved movies, spending time with her family, going on cruises, and visiting the casino — where she enjoyed the excitement, the lights, and the fun of trying her luck. She embraced life with warmth and curiosity, always finding joy in shared moments and new experiences. 

Above all, Connie cherished time with her family and friends. She is survived by her children: Tim (Terri) Winkelman, Thad (Susan) Winkelman, Lynn (Wayne) Philbin, Crystal Thomas Smith, Kevin (Chris) Thomas, Matt Thomas, Jennifer (Troy) Gallo, Adam Thomas, and Nelle Thomas. Connie is also survived by her ex‑husband Lonnie (Linda) Havens. Connie and Lonnie divorced in 1979, but after she moved to Hillsboro, Missouri, Connie, Lonnie, and Linda rebuilt a warm friendship that remained meaningful throughout her life. She was blessed with 16 grandchildren and 14 great‑grandchildren, along with many cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is also survived by her sister, Janet (Donny) Davis. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Ozzie (1916–2003) & Gertie (1925–2017) Calderwood, her sister Jeanne Frost (1952–2016), and her husbands Glenn Higgins (1945–1980) — whom she divorced in 1969 — Duane Dean Winkelman (1946–1972), and Wesley K. Thomas (1948–2020).

A celebration of life will be held on October 3, 2026, with visitation at 10:00 a.m. and services at 11:00 a.m., at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.In honor of Connie’s wish to be buried in her pajamas, some of the family will be wearing pajamas to her service. Guests are warmly invited to attend in pajamas or very casual attire — optional, of course — as a tribute to Connie’s joyful spirit and the way she embraced life.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Hospice Festus, 3190 US Highway 61, Ste G1000, Festus, MO 63028, in recognition of Connie’s compassionate nature and lifelong devotion to helping others. Her family and friends will forever carry her strength, kindness, and faith in their hearts.
