She was born April 27, 1922, in Columbus, Nebraska, the daughter of Herman and Martha (Siefken) Hellbusch. She graduated from Krammer High School and went on to attend Beauty School in Denver, Colorado.
Evelyn returned to Columbus, Nebraska and married William "Bill" DeWitt and to this union were their three children; Steven, Mary, and Robert. She worked at BD Medical - Pharmaceutical Systems for 25 years. Upon her retirement she moved to Topeka, Kansas in 1991. Bill preceded her in death on June 17, 1993. She later married Herman Waak; he preceded her in death on December 24, 2004.
Survivors include her children Steven W. (Barb) DeWitt of Arvada, CO, Mary (Larry) Dutton of Feeding Hills, MA, and Robert A. (Janet) DeWitt of Topeka, KS; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands and siblings, Arthur Hellbusch, Delores Cattau, Hilda Costello, and Stella Losasso.
She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.
Evelyn was strong willed, a hard worker, enjoyed sewing and always active with the children and was an avid walker. She was a very Christian woman. Her father was instrumental in building the Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus, Nebraska. She attended Faith Lutheran Church here in Topeka.
A Celebration of her Life will be at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at the Penwell-Gabel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. She will be laid to rest next to her first husband William DeWitt at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. Memorial contributions may be made the charity of your choice.
