Wanda Hug Lawrence, 92, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 15, 2026, leaving behind a long life full of family, faith, and stories that will be told for generations.
She was born September 3, 1933, in Topeka, Kansas, to Clarence and Julia (Patterson) Hug. A proud graduate of Topeka High School’s class of 1952, Wanda grew up in a time when life moved a little slower, neighbors knew your name, and hard work was simply expected.
Wanda spent many years working as a proofreader and editor for Jostens Publications, an occupation that suited her perfectly. She had a sharp eye for detail, a steady hand, and the kind of patience that kept things running smoothly behind the scenes.
She was also a faithful member of Lakeview Church of the Nazarene in Topeka, where her faith remained a constant throughout her life.
Wanda first married Bob Case, and together they welcomed two sons, Craig and Scott. Though their marriage later ended, the family they created remained at the center of Wanda’s life.
On October 21, 1978, she married Harry Lawrence in Topeka, Kansas. Their life together was built on companionship, laughter, and the kind of everyday moments that quietly become the best memories.
But if you asked Wanda what mattered most, the answer was always her family.
She is survived by her sons, Craig (Ann) Case and Scott Case; her grandchildren, Heather (Casey) Hicks, Lance (Bethany) Case, Allison (Jake) Taylor, and Grant (Julie) Kimble; and her great-grandchildren Brendan, Camden, Harper, Aniston, Alex, Emma, Fox, Max, and Rainey.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry Lawrence; her parents; and her siblings, Rosemary Shadid, Duane Hug, and Darrell Hug.
Wanda had a special place in her heart for animals, and any stray cat that crossed her path likely had a better life because of it.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Family will greet friends and loved ones for a visitation at 10:00 a.m. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene at 2835 SE Croco Rd., Topeka.
In honor of Wanda’s lifelong love for animals, memorial contributions may be made to Helping Hands Humane Society, 5720 SW 21st St., Topeka, KS 66604.
Those who knew Wanda know that a life like hers doesn’t really end—it echoes in the laughter of grandchildren, in stories told around kitchen tables, and in the quiet ways a family continues forward because of the love she gave them.
