Thomas Redfield McCue, age 97, passed away on December 25, 2025 at Pioneer Ridge Assisted Living, Lawrence, KS
He was born on January 4, 1928, in Topeka, KS, to Howard and Blanche (Larson) McCue. Tom was the oldest of four children. He attended Topeka Public Schools, graduating from Topeka High School in 1946. Tom was a very good tennis player and was a member of the THS tennis team. Tom attended Washburn University, graduating in 1949. Following the lead of his father and uncle, Tom decided to study law and attended Washburn Law School, graduating in 1951. Tom was a member of Alpha Delta fraternity and Delta Theta Phi law fraternity.
Tom moved to Wichita and worked for an insurance company. While residing in Wichita he co-owned a small airplane. He took flying lessons until deciding it was too dangerous. He loved airplanes, however, and could often identify planes by their wing configuration or other features. He also has fond memories of climbing Longs Peak in Colorado during the 1950s.
Subsequently Tom returned to Topeka and began employment as an attorney and administrative law judge for the Kansas Department of Labor/Human Resources, first officed in Topeka, and later, Overland Park. He retired in 1996 after more than 35 years of service. He was a member of the Kansas Bar Association.
Tom was an avid golfer and a special memory is playing the Pebble Beach course in California when on a trip with his brother, sister-in-law, and nephew. Tom was a good writer and liked to follow politics and news, writing letters to the editor and to congressional representatives. Family members and others appreciated his witty humor in letters and other writings.
Tom was generous, especially to family, whether helping financially, providing words of wisdom, companionship, or emotional support. He also donated to many causes.
Tom is survived by his sister, Mary, of Lawrence; six nieces and nephews; Allan, Steve, and Mara of Massachusetts; and Carol, Mike, and Mark of Topeka, as well as several cousins, and grand nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Marcia (Don) Hemphill of Topeka, and his brother Allan Homer (Cynthia) McCue of Wenham, MA.
Tom requested cremation. No services are planned at this time. Burial will take place at a later date.
