Thelma Ruth Mann, 62, Topeka, passed away on Friday, March 23, 2012 at Midland Care Hospice Services.
Thelma was born November 21, 1949 at the Holton, Kansas Community Hospital to Ruth C. (Sigmund) Robinson and Oliver L. Robinson. She was born with multiply defects – a hole in the heart; one good lung; and with no pulmonary valve.
On August 13, 1957 Thelma had open heart surgery at the Mayo Clinic to repair the hole in her heart. She was one of the first one hundred open heart surgeries done at the Mayo Clinic and the world. Hers' was considered one of the first few completely successful at the time.
She grew up in the rural Woodlawn community in Nemaha County attending elementary school years at the Woodlawn country grade school. Thelma attended high school at Wetmore High and graduated in the class of 1968. After high school she attended a business school, Electric Computer Processing Institute (ECPI), in Kansas City, Mo. She then worked four years for Commerce Bank of Kansas City, Mo. as a computer programmer. In September of 1972 Thelma moved to Topeka and worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas as a computer programmer and analysis until 1986 when she retired for health reasons.
Thelma was married to Gary Lee Mann of Topeka on April 20, 1974. They made their home in Topeka for 38 years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Topeka where she was a volunteer, member of White Cross and the Estes Shafer Circle for many years. Thelma was also a volunteer for many years in her local school district, Auburn-Washburn Rural. Thelma enjoyed reading and doing crafts. She loved to make things and then giving them away to family and friends.
Thelma Mann was preceded in death by her parents, Oliver L. Robinson and Ruth C. (Sigmund) Robinson-Wikle.
Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Mann, of Topeka; her two sons – Jeffrey M. Mann of Lenexa, Kansas and Eric M. Mann of Overland Park, Kansas; a brother, Melvin D. Robinson of Manhattan, Kansas and three nephews.
Thelma will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 and visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at First Baptist Church. Private family inurnment will be in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
