Steve R. Means, 66, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2024.

He was born September 10, 1957, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Johnny Means, Sr. and Irene Forbes. He graduated from Shawnee Mission High school. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served until 1978.

He was a maintenance man for over 30 years. Following his time as a maintenance man, he began to drive a school bus. He served the Topeka and Auburn communities and cared for the children he transported on the daily. He loved to volunteer to drive for school activities.

Steve’s greatest pride and joy was spending time with his family. He loved having family barbeques. He loved his time in the Navy and enjoyed learning about various ships. Steve was a history buff. He loved to build fish tanks and was a plant collector.

Steven married Dawn Gharst on August 25, 2001 in Topeka, KS.

He is survived by his wife, Dawn Means; his children, Steven (Dallas) Ruckman, Joey (Jaimie) Ruckman, Christina (Andrew) Means, Devin (Marcos) Means, Chelsea Means and Christopher Means; 14 grandchildren and one great grandchild; and numerous siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and one nephew.

A celebration of life will be held from 2:00pm-4:00pm with memories being shared at 3:00pm on Saturday, August 10, 2024 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. In his honor, memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society PO Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
