Ruby D. Unruh

Ruby Diana Unruh, 97, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026.

She was born February 27, 1929, in Burrton, Kansas, the daughter of David and Adina (Flickner) Schrag. She graduated from Norwich High School. After graduation, she furthered her education at Bethel College, earning her Bachelors Degree in Education.

Ruby married Allison Arlo Unruh on May 23, 1954 in Kingman, KS. They welcomed two daughters, Barbara and Shirley, to their union in marriage.

Ruby dedicated many years teaching the young minds of 1st graders until her retirement. In addition to teaching, she was a farmer’s wife and helped on the family farm. She enjoyed gardening and tending to their land.

She was a faithful participant of the Southern Hills Mennonite Church, of Topeka. Prior to her participation at Southern Hills Mennonite Church, she was a member at the Perryton Mennonite Church where she taught Sunday school and served on many church committees. Ruby was a Board Member for the Et Cetera Shop in Liberal, Kansas.

Ruby was an excellent quilter, enjoyed sewing, reading and working puzzles. She collected bells throughout the years. Family time was important to Ruby and she loved time spent playing games. They often traveled together to see other members of their extended family. Allison and Ruby ventured on many bus trips with the Mennonite Disaster Services lending a hand to those in need and attending conferences.

She leaves behind her daughters, Barbara (Alan) Ewy and Shirley (Doug) Hitt; her grandchildren, Andrew (Brooke) Ewy and Suzanne Ewy; great grandchildren, Adam and James Ewy; her brother, Joe (Nancy) Schrag, sister in laws, Verdene Schrag and Rickey Schrag as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Allison; her parents and siblings, Eldon (Ruth) Schrag, Lester Schrag, Glen (Marilyn) Schrag, Myron Schrag, Infant Allen Schrag and Infant Bessie Schrag.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am., Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Southern Hills Mennonite Church, 511 SE 37th Street, Topeka, Kansas 66605. She will be laid to rest in Perryton, Texas with her husband at a later date.
