Listen to Obituary

Ronald “Ron” Leon Rumsey, 74, passed away peacefully on September 11, 2025, in his hometown of Topeka, Kansas. Born on December 10, 1950, to the late Robert and Ferne Rumsey, Ron lived a life full of service, laughter, and love.

A proud 1968 graduate of Topeka High School, Ron went on to dedicate 28 years of service to the Topeka Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Captain. His commitment to protecting others continued through his work with E-Kan Fire Equipment and Capital City Fire, where he serviced fire extinguishers across the state of Kansas.

Ron enjoyed many passions throughout his life. He spent countless hours on the open road touring the U.S. on his Harley, enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, golfing, and road-tripping, and never turned down a chance to play a game of cards or a round of slow-pitch softball with his closest friends. He especially loved traveling with Jane and his best friend, Mike Fox.

Family was Ron’s greatest joy. He never missed a sporting event or special occasion for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether at the soccer field, the softball diamond, or the volleyball court, his presence was a constant reminder of his loyalty and love.

Ron’s wit, humor, and big personality left an impression wherever he went. He was a jokester who always had a quick comeback, a loyal friend, and a man with a heart of gold. A true fan at heart, Ron was devoted to the Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Chiefs, and Kansas Jayhawks, proudly cheering them on through every season. He truly lived life to the fullest.

Ron is survived by Jane Wooster, his beloved companion and the love of his life; his brother, Rick Rumsey; his children, Jennifer (Chris) Falk and Ryan (Natalie) Rumsey; his grandchildren, Hanna (Mark) Anderson, Taylor Falk, Rylie Rumsey, and Lilly Rumsey; his great-grandchildren, Brynn, Ivy, Ember, and Boone; and his niece, Jodi (Ricke) Yerta, along with their children Dr. Trey (Dr. Ellie) Yerta and Trevin Yerta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Ferne Rumsey.

A Memorial Service will be held at 10:00am Friday, September 19, 2025 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home. The family would like to invite you all to 115 N Kansas Ave immediately following the service for a Celebration of Life, where lunch will be served.
