Richard Steven Johnson Sr. was born on November 22, 1941, in St. Louis, Missouri. He departed from this world on March 2, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by loyalty, integrity, and a remarkable sense of humor.

After graduating from Maryland Heights, Richard dedicated a significant chapter of his life to serving his country. He joined the active duty Air Force in 1958 and served until approximately 1966. Later, he transitioned to the Air Guard, where he continued to serve until his retirement in 1995. As a proud veteran of the Gulf War (Desert Storm), Richard achieved the esteemed rank of Chief Master Sergeant. His dedication did not go unnoticed; he was honored with numerous awards and medals, including the Air Force Longevity Medal, National Defense Service Bronze Star, Armed Forces Reserves Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Reserve Forces Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

Beyond his military accomplishments, in his professional life, he channeled his passion for fishing into an entrepreneurial venture, creating custom fishing rods, jigs, and tackle under the name RJ Custom Rods. This endeavor connected him with fellow fishing enthusiasts and allowed him to share his love for the hobby.

Richard's interests extended far beyond his military and business pursuits. He was an avid fisherman, enjoyed riding motorcycles, indulged in woodworking, and found joy in gardening and reading. These hobbies were a testament to his hardworking spirit and zest for life, reflecting a man who embraced both the simple pleasures and the complexities that life had to offer.

His personality shined brightly through his honest, hardworking nature, and he was incredibly loyal to those he held dear. Richard's great sense of humor was a hallmark of his character, bringing warmth and laughter to every gathering.

Richard is survived by his brother, Jimmy (Pokey) Johnson of Kansas, and sisters, Margret Johnson, of Texas and Patty (Ed) Govro, of Missouri. He leaves behind a cherished son, Richard Johnson II of Kansas, alongside his beloved granddaughter, Patience (Tyler) Ard, and great-grandson, Waylon Ard, both also of Kansas. Additionally, he will be missed by his step-grandchildren: Tina Whittington, Robert Gatewood, and Richard Gatewood, as well as step-great-granddaughters, Camarra Smith and Alaiya Whittington, all of Kansas Richard’s life touched many, leaving behind a multitude of nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.

He now joins his wife, Jane Johnson, and his parents, William Kenneth and Catherine Johnson—those who loved him dearly and whom he cherished in return.

A visitation to honor Richard's life will be held on March 9, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Topeka, Kansas. He will be laid to rest following the service at Memorial Park Cemetery.
