Rachel Marie Hines, 97, Topeka, passed away March 17, 2012. She was born December 9, 1914, in Beloit, KS, the daughter of Michael G. and Minnie Fetter Donabauer.
Rachel attended rural schools in Mitchell County and graduated from Beloit High School. She later earned her BA and Master's in Education degrees from Washburn University. On May 28, 1939, in Salina, she married Walter F. Hines. He survives. Rachel spent 30 years as a teacher in Kansas schools. She began teaching in rural schools of Mitchell County, later taught first grade in Beloit City Schools, and ended her career teaching first grade at Whitson Elementary School, after 23 years. She retired in 1976. Rachel was a member of Tau Delta Pi, honorary scholastic society at Washburn University; life member of KNEA; Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary teacher's sorority; Chapter CS, PEO sisterhood; and First Presbyterian Church in Topeka.
Rachel is survived by husband, Walter of Topeka; daughter, Deborah L. (William R.) Norman of Kansas City, MO; son, Donald W. (Susan) Hines of Ellsworth, KS; grandsons, Christopher and Michael Norman; great grandchildren, Hanna and Jack Norman, all of Kansas City, MO; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hines was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2012, at McCrite Plaza in Topeka. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Highland Cemetery in Ashland, KS.
