Paul "Dean" Massey, 84, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Born on August 17, 1940, to Harold Massey and Virginia Norland, Dean spent his formative years cultivating a spirit of dedication and perseverance. He attended Seaman High School and went on to pursue a career at Westar Energy Company, where he embodied the values of hard work and commitment.
On March 1, 1959, Dean married his best friend and the love of his life, Martha Meyer. Together, they were married for over 66 years, nurturing a family that included raising four beloved sons.
Dean was a man of few words yet possessed a wisdom that was deeply felt by those around him. When he spoke, you listened. He pursued hobbies that connected him to the beauty of life, embracing the joys of hunting, and fishing while relishing the tranquility of caring for his yard and feeding the birds. He was an avid bowler, bowling a 299. Dean and Martha shared a love for travel, often exploring the breathtaking mountains of Colorado. Renowned for his culinary skills, Dean was celebrated for his exquisite steaks and perfectly-cooked hamburgers, although he humbly acknowledged his wife’s superiority in crafting apple pie.
In quieter moments, Dean found delight in the cinematic adventures of Western legends such as John Wayne and Clint Eastwood, and was a devoted fan of the series Yellowstone. His heart, however, lay in the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; their laughter and accomplishments filled him with unparalleled joy and pride. He was their steadfast supporter, always available to share in their endeavors and triumphs.
Dean is preceded in death by his son, Sheldon Massey. Parents, Harold and Virginia. His sister, Carol Hicks and three brothers, Bill Massey, Fred Massey, and Mike Massey.
Survivors include his loving wife, Martha, his sons, Douglas (Theresa) Massey of Meriden, KS, Scott (Shari) Massey of Oswego, KS, and Dennis (Teresa) Massey of Topeka, KS. Other survivors include his brother, Tom Massey of St. Mary’s, KS, sister, Judy Massey of Topeka, KS, as well as 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, all of whom will miss him very much.
A visitation in honor of Dean will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Mount Hope Cemetery Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS 66604, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, followed by memorial services beginning at 11:00 AM, officiated by Pastor David Myers.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Dean’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Dean Massey will be remembered not only for his accomplishments, but for the love he gave to his family and friends. He will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.
