Nolan O. Brohaugh

Nolan O. Brohaugh, 86, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021.

He was born July 14, 1935, in Red Wing, Minnesota, the son of Arthur and Elma (Aamodt) Brohaugh. Nolan graduated from Central High School in St. Paul, MN. He received a Bachelor's Degree in Art from University of Minnesota in 1961 and a Master's Degree in Social Work from Florida State University in 1967. He served in the United States Army. He was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado and served as a Color Guard in Washington, DC at the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. He was honorably discharged in 1964.

Nolan was a social worker with The Menniger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas. He coordinated social work for the families of the inpatients in the Alcohol Recovery Unit, was the Assistant Admissions Director, and provided workshops and consultation. Nolan retired from The Menniger Foundation in 2002. He also taught substance abuse courses at Washburn University and served on the board for Florence Crittenton.

He enjoyed traveling with Don to Panama City Beach, FL, going on walks, reading non-fiction books and biographies, working in his yard (green thumb), going thrifting and to antique shops, spending time with his family, going to the movies, and spending time on the water, skiing and swimming. He had a passion for visiting New York Broadway shows. Some of his favorites were Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, and Kinky Boots. He enjoyed listening to Barbara Streisand.

Nolan married Donna Schiel on June 16, 1962 in St. Paul, Minnesota. In their marriage, they had two sons, Josh and Seth Brohaugh. They later divorced after 43 years of marriage.

He married Don Thompson on December 5, 2015 in Topeka, Kansas. Survivors include his husband, Don Thompson; Son, Josh (Stacy Forgy) Brohaugh; step son, Neil (Krystle) Thompson; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; and ex-wife, Donna Schiel Brohaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Seth Brohaugh; brother, Duane Arthur Brohaugh; and sister, Carol Yvonne Benedict.

A Celebration of Nolan's life will be at 10:00am on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66604. The family will greet guests on Thursday, July 29, 2021 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home. In honor of Nolan's love for the beach, please wear your favorite beach attire.
