Michael “Mike” Eugene Ray, 72, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away on August 27, 2025. Born on October 25, 1952, in Hanover, Kansas, to Eugene “Gene” Ray and Helen (Smetana) Ray, Mike lived a life marked by curiosity, quiet joy, a fondness for science fiction novels-and the occasional winning streak.
A 1970 graduate of Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri, Mike went on to build a long and dedicated career at the Goodyear factory in Topeka, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement. Throughout his career, he was a proud member of the URW Local Union #307.
Though he lived a quiet life, Mike had a vibrant love for games and entertainment in all forms. He was a lifelong sports card collector, a classic car enthusiast, a trivia whiz, and a voracious reader. He was always ready to test his luck-whether with a $1 scratch ticket or an electronic slot machine at the casino. Friends and family knew that when it came to trivia or games of chance, Mike was always “in it to win it.”
Mike was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his four siblings, several nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, and a growing number of great-great nieces and nephews.
To honor Mike’s memory, the family invites you to pick up a $1 scratch ticket and try your luck. If his winning streak rubs off on you-or if you’d simply like to share a memory-please do so in the Guest Book below.
Per his wishes, Mike will be cremated. A private placement of his ashes will take place in the Rose Garden Pavilion Ossuary at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
Contributions in Mike’s memory may be made to the NAADAC Education and Research Foundation, supporting the health and vitality of individuals, families, and communities through the advancement of the addiction profession.
