Mary Louise “Mary Lou” Irwin, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas at the age of 96. Born on April 24, 1929, in a country home near Nortonville, Kansas, Mary Lou was the third of five children born to Clarence and Merle (Lewis) Matthews. She led a life rich in love, laughter, and dedication to her family and faith.
Mary Lou attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham in 1946. That spring, she met the love of her life, Clarence, at the Valley Falls Skating Rink. They were married on March 21, 1947, at the minister’s parsonage in Nortonville. Together they shared the trials and joys of life for 69 years until his passing in 2016. Theirs was a love that blossomed over the years, filled with family, friends, and countless moments of joy. One of their favorite activities during retirement was square dancing. It was great fun and they met many wonderful friends!
As a homemaker, Mary Lou excelled in creating a warm and welcoming home, demonstrating her exceptional skills as a passionate cook and seamstress. For about 20 years, she had a cottage industry. Working for several Topeka decorators, she made custom draperies. Large bolts of fabric were carefully measured, cut, and sewn (by machine and hand) to create lovely draperies for local homes and businesses. Her devotion extended beyond her household; she was an active member of Crestview United Methodist Church. Through bible studies, ladies’ circles, helping to deliver Meals on Wheels, and mission work, she enriched the lives of many while embodying the spirit of service and kindness.
Mary Lou’s legacy lives on through her vibrant family. She is survived by her children, Joyce (Allan) Robinson of Tecumseh and Leslie (Bobbi) Irwin of Topeka; her beloved grandchildren, Kristen (Eric) Franklin of Salina, Brady (Janelle) Irwin of Tallahassee, Brian (Jaimie Ribera) Robinson of Provo, UT, Mark Robinson of Merriam, KS, and Amy (Michael) Neeley of Topeka; her great-grandchildren, Sadie, Cole, Katelyn, Grayson, Gabbi, Levi, and Evie; and her sister, Caroline Kern. Their lives were forever touched by her boundless love and support. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her daughter, Susan; her parents; and siblings, Noma Eisler, Dr. Joe Matthews DDS, and Clarine Coleman.
A funeral ceremony to honor Mary Lou’s memory will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Crestview United Methodist Church in Topeka. Her family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to the service. She will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery with her beloved husband, Clarence. Mary Lou will be remembered not only for her unwavering love and kindness but also for the vibrant life she shared with so many.
Her legacy will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her, leaving behind a lasting imprint of compassion, warmth, and family devotion.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Meals on Wheels of Topeka, 2134 SW Westport Dr., Topeka, KS 66614 in Mary Lou’s honor.
