Listen to Obituary

Mary Ann Starbuck (Morie), passed away peacefully on her birthday, March 29, 2026, in Topeka, surrounded by her loved ones and on her own terms. Born on March 29, 1939, in Beardstown, Illinois, Mary Ann’s life was marked by unwavering dedication, boundless love, and a vibrant spirit that touched all that knew her.

A proud graduate of Highland Park High School in 1957, Mary Ann went on to graduate from Washburn University in 1961 with a Bachelor of Education. Her passion for teaching shone early in her career when she worked as a Physical Education teacher for Topeka Public Schools up until 1967—a time during which she inspired young minds and fostered a lifelong appreciation for sports.

Mary Ann’s commitment to her work extended far beyond those early years. After taking a few years off to start her family, she went back to work in 1972 by first becoming the Province Alumnae Chair for the Delta Gamma Sorority, traveling through Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas. While doing that, she also started a new career in banking by working as a secretary and receptionist at Topeka Savings Association. When TSA was acquired by Bank IV Topeka in 1990, she moved over to the Bank IV tower in the same roll. In 1994, Mary Ann devoted the remainder of her work life serving as the receptionist for the Kansas Medical Society, where she worked faithfully until the very day she passed away. She was immensely proud of her work there, cherishing the respect and affection of her coworkers who came to regard her as a beloved and irreplaceable presence.

Known for being the best friend anyone could hope for, Mary Ann was a vibrant and warm friend to all. She was ageless with a classic sense of beauty and order that was always up for planning and organizing and coordinating an outing for her friends and family. Her zest for life was evident in every aspect—from her love of all things sports, especially her Washburn Ichabod’s and her enthusiastic attendance at countless games, and her passionate following of, first her children, and then her grandchildren’s endeavors, always cheering them on no matter the circumstances.

An avid traveler later in life, Mary Ann embraced adventure and exploration, often joining trips organized by the Washburn Alumni Association traveling up the eastern coast of the United States as well as all through Europe. She was also a devoted member of the Delta Gamma Sorority and the Washburn Alumni Association, maintaining board memberships and active participation throughout her life. Additionally, she held positions with NONOSO and the Washburn’s Women Honorary Association—all of these, an emblem of the friendships and community she treasured deeply. Her commitment to friendship extended to the cherished tradition of “The Supper Club”, a close-knit group with whom she shared monthly dinners, laughter, and stories that enriched her life immeasurably.

Mary Ann is survived by her two loving sons, Scott (Anne) Starbuck of Topeka and Chad (Tiffany) Starbuck of Salt Lake City. Her legacy lives on strongly through her grandchildren: Nicholas (Cali) Starbuck of Topeka, Natalie (Andrea) Sutherland of Topeka, Leah Starbuck of Wichita, Beau Starbuck of Salt Lake City, and Ava Starbuck of Salt Lake City. She was also blessed with great-grandchildren Le’Veah and Giovanni, both residents of Topeka, who brought her endless joy and pride.

She was preceded in death by her father, Anthony Morie; her mother, Romona (Charlieville) Morie; and her devoted husband, Clifford Starbuck.

Mary Ann’s departure marks the end of an era filled with steadfast love, fierce loyalty, and enduring friendships. She left this world in the way she lived her life—surrounded by those she loved, with grace, strength, and the quiet determination that defined her life. Her memory will remain a guiding light to her family and friends, a testament to a life well lived and a heart that never ceased to give.

A Funeral Mass to honor her life will take place at 11:30am Friday, April 10th, 2026 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. The visitation will begin at 10:30am and a lunch will follow the service.
