Marilyn Elizabeth Johnson, cherished wife, devoted mother, and beloved educator, left this world on October 15, 2025, in Lawrence, Kansas, after a long, courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Born on August 5, 1942, in Salina, Kansas, Marilyn's journey was marked by dedication, passion, and a profound love for learning and community.

Marilyn began her academic journey at Topeka High School before advancing her studies at Washburn University, where she earned both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. With a heart full of purpose, she devoted 35 remarkable years to the field of education, including 8 years with the Topeka Public Schools and 27 years with the Lawrence Public Schools. Her commitment to fostering the minds of young individuals extended even further as she imparted her knowledge and skills when she volunteered to teach English to inmates at the Douglas County Jail for several years. After she retired from public education, she continued to inspire others by working at the University of Kansas in the Education Research Department, specializing in Education Techniques Development until 2017.

Marilyn was not only an educator but a giver at heart. Her selfless contributions to various charities within the Lawrence community, especially her support for the Boys and Girls Club of Lawrence, reflect her deep-seated belief in the power of nurturing young lives. She was proud to champion their efforts in shaping a brighter future for the youth.

She married Larry Ruggles in Topeka, KS after high school. They welcomed one daughter, Marci, to their union in marriage. They later separated. But life had wonderful plans in store for her when she reunited with her high school acquaintance, Dr. Carl J. Johnson, at their 55-year class reunion. They exchanged vows in 2016, and their partnership shone brightly until the very end. Just a couple of weeks before her passing, they were able to attend their 65-year class reunion, creating memories of laughter and connection with old friends that Marilyn treasured dearly.

Marilyn's passions extended beyond education; she was an avid lover of art and traveled extensively, filling her home with beautiful displays that reflected her creative spirit. Her adventurous spirit took her across the globe, traveling with the Washburn Alumni Association and accompanying Carl on business trips to Europe and various locations across the US. Among her travels, the experiences she cherished most were those spent exploring the beauty of Australia, New Zealand, and China.

Those surviving to carry on her legacy include her devoted husband, Dr. Carl J. Johnson, her beloved daughter, Marci Levota, and grandson, Tanner Buehler.

Marilyn leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories woven through her lifetime of teaching, loving, and giving. As we honor her remarkable life, may we find comfort in the countless lives she touched and the indelible mark she left on her community. Marilyn Elizabeth Johnson was a beacon of light, compassion, and resilience, and while her presence will be profoundly missed, her spirit will endure in the hearts of all who knew her.

Marilyn will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas, on Friday, 14 November at 11:00 am. Following the graveside service, a Celebration of Marilyn's life will take place at the Mount Hope Funeral Chapel until 2:00 pm. Memories will be shared at around 12:40 pm by her family and friends. In her honor, memorial contributions are suggested to Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence - Center for Great Futures, 2910 Haskell Ave, Lawrence, KS 66046.
