Marie Culver (Angie Marie Newton Culver), aged 102, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026, in Topeka, KS. She was born in Midland, TX, February 11, 1923 to Horace and Lula Newton along with her identical twin sister Annie Marian Newton.
Marie graduated from Midland High School in 1941 where she was a cheerleader, played softball and developed secretarial skills. She met Marion F. Culver while singing in the First Methodist Church choir while he was in the Air Force. They married in 1946. They were stationed from the east to west coasts before settling in Topeka, KS in 1954. Over the years, she held various roles including volunteer nurse, secretary, and insurance agent.
An active member of University United Methodist Church, Marie enjoyed singing in the choir and volunteering. Her hobbies and talents included Bingo, Bridge, Canasta, fishing, golf, walking, attending her children's activities, following local sports teams, hosting Sunday School parties, travelling, spending summers in Colorado, cooking, needlepoint, knitting, and sewing.
Marie was known and loved for her spunk and witty sayings (Momisms). She will be missed by her extensive family. She is survived by her son John David Culver (Libby), daughter Elaine Wellborn, step-daughter Joy Slayton (children Patrick Slayton, Diane Schmidt and Mary Richards); nieces Lu'Ann Reeder and Gail Spivey (Jim) - her twin sister's daughters; grandsons Justin Watson (Dawn), Michael Culver (Danica) and Josh Culver (Annabelle), and granddaughter Angela Wellborn; three step-grandchildren Hoytt and Hugh Boles, and Ellie Boles Mayer; great-grandchildren William, Ryker, Luke, Hope Marie, Jane, and Ivy.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at University United Methodist Church. Services are scheduled for Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 11:00 AM at the same location, with burial to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
