Lorene R. Stephens, 100, of Topeka, passed away Monday, March 19, 2012 at Lexington Park Nursing Home.
She was born July 28, 1911, on a family farm in Ray County, Missouri, the daughter of Willis and Hattie (Smith) Shelton. Lorene was the eighth of nine children. In the 1930's, Lorene moved to Topeka where she married John K. Stephens on October 6, 1940. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1971. In addition to being a homemaker, she worked for Hallmark Cards, Luce Clipping and Western Stationary, retiring in 1976.
Lorene was a member of Highland Park Methodist Church and was in the quilters circle for many years.
Survivors include a son John (Karen) Stephens, Jr., Parkville, Missouri; one granddaughter, Lori (Darrin) Fanning of Columbia, Missouri, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 23, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Topeka Cemetery. Lorene will lie in state from Noon to 5:00 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.
