Loren Ernest Thormodsgard, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on November 3, 2025, in Topeka, Kansas, at the age of 76. He was born on April 28, 1949, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Ernest and Eileen (Jones) Thormodsgard.
Loren pursued his education at the University of South Dakota. While attending college, he served with honor in the South Dakota Air National Guard. In his professional life, he took great pride in being self-employed and co-owning a Bail Bonds company in Topeka alongside his beloved wife, Charlene.
Loren and Charlene Thompson married on August 9, 1985, in Oklahoma, surrounded by their families. Early on, Charlene knew that he was the one for her, and her intuition served her well. Their contrasting personalities balanced and grounded each other and led to 40 happy years together filled with joy and plenty of laughter. His greatest quality of all was his dry and ornery sense of humor. Loren was an absolutely charismatic and hilarious man. He knew how to make an entire room laugh until they had tears in their eyes. His off-the-wall jokes will be missed desperately by all those who knew him.
Loren's passions extended far beyond his career. He was an avid collector of antiques and had a profound appreciation for photography. An artist at heart, he enjoyed painting and sketching, demonstrating his creative spirit. His love for history and learning was matched by his Green Thumb; gardening, both flowers and vegetables, brought him immense joy. Additionally, he earned his pilot's license, showcasing his adventurous nature.
Loren is survived by his wife, Charlene Thormodsgard; his children, Kristi Ludwig, John Thormodsgard, and Allan (Laurie) Grell; his grandchildren, Ashlyn (Parker), Ava, Joshua, Alyssa, Hannah, and Ryan; and great-grandchildren, Serenity and Peyton. He is also survived by his brother, Wayne (Jackie) Thormodsgard.
Loren was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Grell; his grandchild, Alison; and his parents.
Honoring his wishes, cremation is planned. In his honor, memorial contributions can be made to the Helping Hands Humane Society 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS 66604.
