Listen to Obituary

Kathleen Susan Atwood nee Laird was born February 22, 1948 to Marlyn and Marjorie Laird. She attended Topeka West High School. She graduated in 1966.

After high school she worked at Hallmark Cards. Though she was born Kathleen, she preferred Kathy.

She is preceded in death by both parents and a half brother Michael Eakes. She is survived by her husband Karl Atwood, her children Staci Olson, Susan Gonzalez, Colby Atwood, and a step son Tony Tyson, her sister Karen Benson, brother Kenneth Laird (Kim) and 10 grandchildren as well as 4 great grand children.

Kathy was married to the love of her life. They married in Miami, Florida on August 11, 1973 and spent 52 wonderful years together.

She was a member of The Girl Scouts of the USA in different positions her entire life. In North Dakota she was the Liaison between Minot AFB and the City of Minot. In California she was a member of the Tres Condados Girl Scout Council and performed the duties of Troop Leader in areas where there was no assigned leader. In Topeka she worked as the shop manager and receptionist for the Girl Scout Council.

After the council was merged, she was still involved with cookie sales and camp transportation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her name be made either to Phoenix Hospice (2945 SW Wanamaker Dr) or your local Girl Scouts.

A visitation will be held from 10:00am to 11:00am on June 13, 2026 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at the same location. After the service, Kathy will go to Westlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery to be laid to rest.
