Junior Utech, 94, passed away peacefully at his home on the morning of July 10, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He was born on December 3, 1931, on the family farm near Ramona, Kansas, where he spent a childhood he often described as among the happiest years of his life.
Junior is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Ann Utech; his son, Michael Ray Utech, of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico; his sons-in-law, Alejandro Cejudo (Michael's husband) of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Allen Gray of Plano, Texas; Allen's wife, Deanne Gray, of Plano, Texas; his grandchildren, Michael Allen Gray of Spokane, Washington, and Natalie Marie Gray of McKinney, Texas; and two of his ten siblings, Dolores Siggs of Goddard, Kansas, and Grace Raven of Marietta, Georgia.
He was preceded in death by two of his three children, Mark William Utech and Teresa Aileen Gray. He was also preceded in death by eight of his ten siblings: Edna Mueller, Erna Peterson, Judith Carstens, Ester Cole, Marie Hill, Fred Utech, Erich Utech, and William Utech; and his parents, William Henry Karl Utech and Marie Anna Utech.
After growing up on the family farm, Junior answered his country's call by serving in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Following his military service, he began a career with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where he worked as a tractor tire builder for 41 years. He took great pride in his work and in providing for his family through decades of dedication and hard work. Junior was a proud champion of his labor union.
In the spring of 1956, Junior met the love of his life, Elizabeth. They married just three months later, each convinced they had found the perfect partner. Their marriage became a remarkable example of love, commitment, and devotion, lasting more than seven decades.
Junior was a deeply spiritual man whose Christian faith guided every aspect of his life. A faithful member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Topeka for many years, he worshiped, served his church community, and found great comfort and purpose in his relationship with God. He enjoyed thoughtful conversations about faith and spirituality and lived his beliefs through kindness, humility, and quiet generosity.
Junior was an avid do-it-yourselfer with a lifelong curiosity about how things worked. He once famously took apart the engine of his 1964 Ford Galaxie and rebuilt it himself, finishing with just one extra part left over. He meticulously maintained his home throughout his life, exhibiting the perfectionism that ran throughout the Utech family in everything he did.
Junior was also a natural philosopher and a poet at heart. He found great joy in writing what he called cowboy poetry, and took quiet pride in the verses he crafted over the years. Some of his prose were quite philosophical which his family called “Juniorology”.
More than anything else, Junior will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He possessed a gentle spirit, a strong work ethic, and a quiet strength that earned the respect of everyone who knew him. His greatest joy came from caring for his family, and the example of integrity, perseverance, and unconditional love that he leaves behind will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
His family finds peace knowing that he is now at rest and reunited with those who went before him. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of all who loved him.
