An educator for over two decades, Joan stood at the forefront of pivotal moments in history, notably teaching during the transformative times surrounding the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954. Joan took some time away from teaching to raise her children before returning to education as a third grade teacher in 1975 at Wanamaker school where she retired in 1995. Her passionate dedication to teaching left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.
In 1977, Joan married her best friend and the love of her life, Roth Gatewood. Together, they combined their families nurturing a loving home for their two families until Roth's passing in 2017.
Joan was a proud Charter member of the PEO Chapter GJ and a PEO member since 1950. Her compassionate spirit led her to volunteer with the Cancer Society during the development of mammography, while she also trained in bio-feedback at the Menninger Foundation. Beyond her professional contributions, Joan actively participated in the Symphony League and Mulvane Art, and was a member of the Topeka Civic Theatre and First Presbyterian Church.
Joan and Roth are survived by a combined family of 6 children, Greg (Edye) Mills, Steven Mills, Mary (Mac) Boatwright, Matthew Gatewood, Arthur (Andrea) Mills, and Adam (Nan) Gatewood.
