Jo Ann Hanson

Jo Ann Sage Hanson, 97, passed away quietly at Presbyterian Manor, an elder care facility in Topeka, Kansas

She was born on June 14, 1926, in Springfield, Missouri, to Ruth (Womack) Sage and Harvey Sage.

She lived in Missouri until age 14 when she moved with her father to San Diego, California. Her mother joined them shortly thereafter. She attended San Diego high school where she became a drummer in the school drum and bugle corps. She was one of four children: two brothers, Houston and Lynnwood, and one sister, Naoma Sage Glenn. She met her future husband, Vivion (Tommy) Thomas Hanson, at a USO function in San Diego. They later married. on February 23, 1945 in San Diego.

Both Jo Ann and Tommy were very active in the church, attending First Southern Baptist in Chula Vista California, and later Twin Cities Southern Baptist, which would later become Amherst Southern Baptist. She later moved to Del Cerro Southern Baptist. At all the churches where she was a member, she worked in the nursery for infants and little ones while parents attended services. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Union, a Sunday School teacher and often a member of the choir at each of these churches.

For a time, she was employed as an administrative assistant at California First Bank and later as a secretary at an accounting firm, as well as being a fulltime homemaker. Tommy worked for U.S. Navy Civil Service and later U.S. Air Force Civil Service.

The family lived a few years in Chula Vista California, and then moved to La Mesa, California. In later years, the family moved to El Cajon, California, and Santee, California.

Among Jo Ann's favorite pastimes were traveling, camping with family and friends, bird watching and crossword puzzles.

Jo Ann is survived by three sons, Larry, Kenneth and Robert, as well as thirteen grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.

Jo Ann was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister, and son Richard Sage Hanson.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Funeral services will be held on March 11, 2024 at 11:30 AM (PT) at Salli Lynn Chapel at Greenwood, 4300 Imperial Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113
The family will also have a "Midwest Memorial Service" on Sunday, March 24 at 2 PM at Shawnee Heights Baptist Church, 4335 SE 29th St. in Topeka, KS 66605
