Harold J Lane

July 1, 1954 — June 22, 2025

Topeka

Harold Jay Lane, born on July 1,1954, in Topeka, Kansas, departed this life peacefully on June 22, 2025, at Midland Care Hospice House. A dedicated husband, father, brother, and friend, Harold leaves behind a legacy of warmth and humor, marked by his unwavering spirit and friendly demeanor.

Harold grew up working at Lane's, the beloved family grocery store that eventually transformed into Lane's BBQ restaurant, a fixture in the community that he was proud to be a part of. His commitment to public service shone through in his roles on the Topeka City Council and as a state representative in Topeka, where he worked diligently to serve the interests of his constituents.

A proud graduate of Topeka High School in 1972, Harold pursued further education at Kaw Valley College, where he studied HVAC at trade school. This education allowed him to develop the skills that accompanied his love for tinkering and fixing things, a hobby that defined much of his life. He was never one to shy away from a challenge and could often be found keeping busy, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need.

Known for his ornery sense of humor, Harold had a knack for sharing jokes that brought joy to those around him. He was the type of man who never met a stranger, always ready to forge new friendships and connect with others. His love for RVing, boating, and culinary adventures only added to the richness of his life, allowing him to create cherished memories with family and friends.

Among Harold's proudest accomplishments were the opportunities he had to meet notable figures such as renowned television chef Bobby Flay and Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. However, his greatest pride stemmed from raising his children and witnessing the growth of his grandchildren, a rewarding journey that brought immense joy to his life.

Harold is survived by his loving wife, Jane Lane; his daughter, Laurie Lane; and his son, Daniel (Rosemary) Lane. He was a cherished grandfather to Ava, Ryan, and Adam Oesterreich, and Autumn and Aaron Lane. He is also survived by his brother, Eugene H. Lane Jr., and sister, Nancy Gierach.

Harold was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Howard Lane Sr., and his mother, Barbara Olive Cue. His presence will be profoundly missed, yet his spirit and the memories he created will continue to resonate within the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Cremation is planned, and there will be no services.
