Gary E. “Rod” Rademacher
Gary E. Rademacher, known to family and friends as “Rod,” passed away on July 7, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas, his 88th birthday. He was born on July 7, 1938, just across the Kansas boarder in Oklahoma to Delmer and Sarah “Babe” Rademacher, who preceded him in death. Rod was also preceded in death by his sisters, Kay Puddin and Ruth Hlavacek.
He is survived by his sister, Judy Morrison.
Rod grew up in Arkansas City, Kansas where he distinguished himself as an outstanding student. Active in speech and debate throughout high school, he possessed a quick mind and a gift for communication that would serve him throughout his life.
Yet his greatest talent was music. Blessed with a rich baritone voice, Rod earned a music scholarship to Wichita State University, where he continued to study music but focused on earning a degree in political science. While attending Wichita State, Rod worked as a disc jockey for a local radio station and later for KAKE TV and radio. During his time there, he hosted a local dance television program modeled after the popular American Bandstand, introducing regional audiences to the music and culture of the era. This is also where he met his wife, Joyce Woodard.
Following college, Rod enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. Joyce joined him there, had their first child, and enjoyed several life-enhancing years abroad.
After returning to civilian life in Wichita, he resumed his work in broadcasting before transitioning into advertising and marketing. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish his own business in 1977, Midwest Marketing. Rod’s innovative approach on how local businesses can effectively advertise, took him across the country for decades, working with thousands of companies in helping their businesses grow. Rod was known for his personal and upbeat style and was always willing to stay for one more cup of coffee.
Rod and Joyce divorced in 1982. Together they raised three children: Thea Rademacher (Steve Fredrickson), Phillip Rademacher (Rachel Rademacher), and Ross Rademacher (Cynthia Rademacher). He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren.
A lifelong learner, Rod possessed an insatiable curiosity about the world. He was an avid student of history, philosophy, religion, and virtually any subject that captured his interest. He relished thoughtful conversation and spirited debate, never shying away from a lively exchange of ideas. His intellect, wit, and enthusiasm for learning left a lasting impression on all who knew him. Rod’s passions extended beyond books and ideas. He had a deep love for his country, a special affection for dogs, and a sincere appreciation for a good home-cooked meal. Above all else, he was proud of his family and took great satisfaction in their accomplishments and happiness.
A remembrance will be held at a later date.
