Doris Maxine Baker of Topeka, KS, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2026, surrounded by love. She had just turned 96 years old and had celebrated with family and friends. She was born to Leroy Lake and Lena Newton on October 22, 1930.
During her lifetime she had several out of the home jobs, but none compared to her real job- keeping a loving home for her beloved husband and five children. Doris loved camping and fishing, but most importantly, just being with her family. Coming from a large family, their house was filled with 10 other children.
On February 26, 1949 she married Gerald Baker and in that marriage came five children, Terry Colwell, Kirk Baker, Jennie Baker, Lucy Van Voben, and Bobbie Baker.
In her later years after the death of her husband, Doris retired to a retirement villa with her constant companion, a sweet little Chihuahua named Amy. At the villa she became well-liked and made friends with many of the residents.
Doris was known among family and friends as having no filter, but a big heart.
She is survived by her sisters, Rita, Marylyn, and Sharon, her brother, Steve, daughters, Terry, Jenny, and Lucy, many grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. All of whom will miss her very much.
She was preceded in death by six of her brothers and sisters, her loving husband Gerald of 49 years, her son, Kirk, and daughter, Bobbie.
A celebration of life is set to take place at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka, KS, 66604 in the next several weeks. Please check back for a date and time.
