Don Mendenhall

Don L. Mendenhall, 88, of Wichita, passed away on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born on December 11, 1919 in Appleton City, MO, the son of Lester and Anna M. Gibson Mendenhall. Don graduated from Appleton City High School in 1938 and was a Coast Guard Veteran of WWII. He had resided in Wichita for the past 60 years before moving to Topeka a month ago. Don owned and operated Mendenhall Furniture for many years before selling the store. He then was employed by the JC Penney Furniture Department for ten years before retiring. He was a member and past president of the Lions Club and was active in the Triad Class of the First United Methodist Church in Wichita. Don married Virginia Neighbors on May 18, 1946 in Wichita. She preceded him in death in September of 1998. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Gleason and husband, Mark of Farmington Hills, MI and Marilyn Waugh and husband, Steve of Topeka, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one sister, Eloise Wells and husband, Delbert of Topeka. Don was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Shannon Gleason Balazy and his brother, Nevin. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Wichita. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Hospice Care, 200 S.W. Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
