Deborah Kay Scanland, a remarkable soul whose warmth and spirit have touched so many lives, passed away peacefully on August 15, 2025, at Stormont Vail Hospital, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on July 11, 1945, in Leavenworth, Kansas, Deborah's journey through life was defined by her steadfast dedication to her family, her profession as a graphic artist and her deep commitment to her community.

Graduating from Topeka High School in 1963, Deborah pursued her passion for the arts, earning a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from Washburn University. She cultivated her creative spirit throughout her life while channeling her artistic talents into a successful career. Deborah worked as a graphic artist before fulfilling various roles with the State of Kansas. Her professional endeavors reflected her generous spirit and creativity, traits that she shared freely with those around her.

Deborah’s personality was a beacon of positivity; she was known for her generosity, kindness, and empathy. With an ever-present smile and an attitude of "everything is wonderful," she had a remarkable way of making everyone feel welcome and valued. Her outspoken nature and friendly disposition left an indelible mark on all who crossed her path.

A lifelong artist, Deborah found joy in various hobbies that further showcased her creativity. She was passionate about making jewelry and was actively involved in many community initiatives, including the Shawnee County Democrats, the Topeka Gem and Mineral Society, and the Topeka Swim Association. Her enthusiasm for K-State sports was well-known; she proudly cheered for her team, inspiring those around her to join in her fervor.

Deborah is survived by her loving children, Adina Scanland, Bart Scanland and Chelsey Scanland. She cherished her roles as a grandmother to Ronin Clock and Cosmo Clock, bringing joy and laughter into their lives. Deborah also shared special bonds with her brother, Bruce Montgomery, and her sisters, Cinda Kunkler, Melissa Follmer, and Jana Cook. Extended family, including numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, will continue to carry her memory in their hearts.

She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Bill Scanland, and her parents, Lloyd and Louellen Montgomery, whose love and guidance shaped the exceptional woman she became.
