Courtland T. Carls

August 13, 1932 — August 1, 2025

Topeka

Courtland Theodore Carls passed away on August 1, 2025, age 92, at McCrite Plaza in Topeka, KS. He was born on August 13, 1932, the son of George T. Carls and Sarella J. Denison Carls in Topeka, KS. He graduated from Berryton Rural High School in 1952. He grew up on a farm in Wakarusa, KS. He was drafted into the Army on May 11, 1955, and was stationed in Korea. When discharged from the Army, he went back to the farm to live with his parents. Courtland loved farming and raising cattle with his father. He enjoyed the many friends he had in the community. He was a religious man and attended church every Sunday. He was a member of Terra Heights Baptist Church.

Courtland had a special friend, Ruth Towne, of Carbondale, KS. They enjoyed going to the movies and music concerts together, and he enjoyed being with her family. Ruth is deceased.

After the passing of his parents, Courtland lived alone on the farm. In the spring of 2016, he sold the farm and moved to McCrites in independent living. He made many friends there, socializing over meals, activities, and field trips. The Terra Heights Baptist Church had closed after Courtland moved, so he attended church services at McCrites. He went on the Honor Flight from Holton, KS, which was the highlight of his life. He was very proud to be a Veteran.

He is survived by his sister, Donna Jean Braum (Mike); two nieces, Kathy J. Lohse (Dr. Robert R. DDS) of Colorado Springs, CO and Cindy L. Braum (Ken Rater) of Lenexa, KS; two great nieces, Lauren Shroff (Neil) of Watchung, NJ and Paige Lohse of Chicago, IL; one great nephew, Rob Lohse (Kate) of Brooklyn, NY; and two great- great nieces, Nina and Naia Shroff.

A graveside service with military honors is scheduled for Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Shawnee Center Cemetery in Wakarusa, KS. Courtland will be laid to rest beside his parents.
