Listen to Obituary

Claudia Kathleen Smith, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2025, at Plaza West Regional Health Center, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on June 4, 1948, in Topeka, Kansas, Claudia's spirit and warmth touched the lives of all who knew her.

Claudia devoted her life to helping others, spending many years as a certified nursing assistant and housekeeper, roles in which her caring nature shone brightly. She was not just a caregiver by profession but by heart, always ready to lend a hand or offer a comforting word. Her commitment to serving the community was further exemplified through her long-standing volunteer work with the Topeka Police Department and the Red Cross, where she earned the admiration and respect of many.

A proud graduate of Seaman High School in 1966, Claudia carried with her the values she embraced throughout her life. She was known for her sweet and innocent nature, a loving demeanor, and an ornery sense of humor that brought smiles to those around her. Her beautiful smile was a reflection of her generous spirit, one that would willingly give her last dollar or the shirt off her back to help someone in need. Claudia's deep faith as a devout Catholic guided her life, anchoring her in love and compassion.

Among her many gifts, Claudia was a wonderful artist who found joy in drawing, crocheting, and painting. She cherished the time spent with visitors, and the company of friends and family brought her immense happiness. Long walks were another passion of hers, allowing her to connect with nature and enjoy the simple pleasures of life.

Her proudest accomplishments were her grandchildren, Eric and Anna Smith, who meant the world to her, as did her remarkable son, Aaron Smith. She delighted in every moment spent with them, often radiating joy as she shared stories and laughter. Claudia's love extended to her faithful companion, her beloved dog, Joey, who was a constant source of joy by her side.

Claudia is survived by her devoted son, Aaron (Stella) Smith; her loving sisters, Tamela (Scott) Mayes and Rebecca Ann (Steve) Weber; her cherished grandchildren, Eric and Anna Smith; as well as several nieces and nephews who will remember her with great fondness.

Preceding Claudia in death were her mother, Louise Adele Schoenfeld; her stepmother, Mary Jane Fleenor; her father, Jacob Claude Fleenor; her grandmother, Francis Schoenfeld; her brother, John Fleenor; and her beloved son, Eric Brian Smith.

Claudia Kathleen Smith leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and artistic beauty. Her warm spirit and gentle touch will be profoundly missed, but her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she so lovingly nurtured throughout her life.
