Charles "Chuck" Willis Hurd III

Charles “Chuck” Willis Hurd III, 75, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of his family.

Chuck was born on August 30, 1950, in Hepler, Kansas, to Charles Willis Hurd Jr. and Mary Kay Hurd. Chuck graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1968. Shortly after graduation, Chuck answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served in the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1970, carrying with him the strength, resilience, and dedication that would define the rest of his life.

After returning home from military service, Chuck welcomed his daughter, Jennifer, and son, Charles, who became the center of his world.

Chuck developed a strong work ethic throughout his life, first working as a welder and later spending 15 years as a truck driver. No matter the job, he was known for his dependability, determination, and willingness to work hard.

Music was one of Chuck’s greatest passions. He began playing the drums in junior high school and continued playing throughout his entire life. His love for music led him to perform with Jim Sto and the Flatland Band, entertaining audiences throughout the Topeka area and creating lifelong friendships through every performance. Chuck also played alongside the Music Makers with Ed & Connie Shaw for many years.

In his younger years, Chuck enjoyed the thrill of racing cars. As the years went on, he developed a deep appreciation for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. Whether behind a drum set, on the road, in the woods, or spending time with those he loved, Chuck embraced life with a quiet spirit and genuine heart.

Above all else, Chuck treasured his family. He shared 20 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Diane Hurd, whose love and companionship brought him great happiness.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Diane Hurd, of Topeka; his son, Charles Willis Hurd IV (Barbara) of McPherson, Kansas; his daughter, Jennifer (James) Meggers of Hutchinson, Kansas; his stepchildren, Billy (Brie) and Cassandra (John); his siblings, Sharon Zibell, Sheila Compton, and Sandy Halloran; his former wife, Sharon; her children, Jamie Mastin and Julie Turco; his grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Willis Hurd Jr. and Mary Kay Hurd; his sister, Sue Pilbrucks; and his brothers, Jim Hurd and Robert Hurd.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, followed by a graveside service at Maple Hill Cemetery. Following the services, the family will welcome friends and loved ones for a time of fellowship at a location to be announced.

Chuck will be remembered for his service to his country, his love of music, his hardworking nature, and his unwavering love he had for his family. His steady presence, kind heart, and the rhythm he brought to the lives of those around him will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A Memorial Service will be held for him at 10:00am Friday August 14, 2026 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave Topeka, Kansas 66604.
