Bud Franklin Garner, beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026, in Topeka, Kansas, surrounded by his loving family. Born on June 20, 1938, in Kennett, Missouri, Bud spent 88 remarkable years gracing this world with his warmth, humor, and steadfast kindness.
Bud's journey began in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, where he graduated from Mt. Vernon Township High School in 1955. Eager to learn and build a bright future, he furthered his education at Rend Lake College, also in Mt. Vernon, graduating in 1960. These early years laid a strong foundation for the remarkable life that would follow.
Over the decades, Bud built a rich and varied career, marked by unwavering diligence and integrity. He first worked for the United States Postal Service before becoming a food broker for Trinity Marketing Corp. Never one to shy away from new challenges, he transitioned into pipe fitting, later owning a construction company in Ft. Worth, Texas. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightest in these years, as did his commitment to the people who worked alongside him. In retirement, Bud remained active and devoted, working full time for his son Kevin at his remodeling company in Topeka, Kansas, taking equal pride in his labor and in supporting his family’s ambitions.
Bud was a true patriot and a lover of history. He also had various hobbies which include gardening, bird watching, photography, and cooking (especially his famous salsa). He was also the certified taste taster of his wife’s cooking.
Faith and community were constants in Bud's life. He was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church in Topeka, where he served as the building and facilities director and played an important role on the finance board. His commitment extended beyond the church walls—Bud was also a member of the Masonic Lodge. Those who knew him in these communities will remember his ready smile and generous heart.
A man beloved by all, Bud's personality was a blend of playful wit, steadfast optimism, and endless generosity. He was truly friendly, always ready to share a joke (even when the punchline sailed over everyone’s heads), and he looked at the positive side of things, reminding us all to be hopeful and kind. Bud was just an all-around good man—always willing to help, always willing to listen, and always loving to be needed. His family recalls fondly his great sense of humor and the laughter that filled every gathering. His greatest joy was found in family get-togethers and the presence of his grandchildren, who brought light into his world.
Bud's legacy lives on in those who survive him: his devoted wife of 65 years Sue Garner; his children, Kevin C. (Nancy Jean) Garner, Elise (David) Ellis, and Rick (Laura) Garner; his sisters Ann Edwards and Beth Tyo. Each will continue to carry forth his spirit of kindness, humor, and faith.
He is reunited in peace with his father, George Garner; his mother, Ella Garner; his sons, Garren Garner and Dale “Sonny” Garner; and his sister, Rose Walker. Their memories together are treasured, and his love for them endures.
Bud Franklin Garner’s life was defined by deep faith, enduring love, and boundless goodwill. His influence on those around him is immeasurable, and his memory will be tenderly cherished always. Though he has left this earthly home, the warmth of his laughter, the comfort of his kindness, and the strength of his example will live on in all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church (in care of the Fellowship Club) 3033 SW Macvicar Ave, Topeka, KS 66611.
