Mary Lynn Menninger-Corder
1950 - 2023

Dr. Mary Lynn Menninger-Corder of Topeka passed away on Saturday, February 18th, 2023 at the age of 72.

She was born October 11th, 1950 in Palo Alto, California, the daughter of Reginald and Mary Corder. She attended Grace Davis High School in Modesto, CA. Mary earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Washburn University (1978) and her Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Kansas (2010).

As a lifelong learner and educator, Mary was deeply involved in the nursing education program at Washburn University for over 14 years. Mary went beyond the classroom walls to ensure the success of every one of her students. She was a compassionate teacher and empathetic friend who will be remembered for her infectious laugh, sharp wit, and way with words. Mary served on the University Library and Sibberson Award Committees. She worked tirelessly to deliver engaging lectures in courses ranging from Palliative Care to Leadership to Theory in the School of Nursing. She received innumerable teaching awards and accolades including teacher of the year several times during her career at Washburn.

Over the years, Mary enjoyed quilting, baking desserts, reading, playing tennis, and swimming. She was passionate about gardening and her yard—every season she would bring beauty to the landscape surrounding her home. She was a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady loving her own kitties and helping feral cats during the winter months. She could be seen driving her beloved red VW Bug with the top down and singing her favorite Beach Boys songs. She was 100% one of a kind and never afraid to be her authentic self.

Mary is survived by her children, Amy Heaton, Zach Cloyd, Ben Cloyd, and Alex Cloyd; grandchildren, Emma Calder, Trevor Calder, and Aiden Cloyd whom she adored spending time with; and siblings, Janet Turner and Charles Corder. She was preceded in death by her parents, Reginald and Mary.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, February 26th, 2023 at Washburn University’s Memorial Union. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Dr. Mary Menninger-Corder scholarship at the Washburn University Foundation, 1729 SW MacVicar Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66604 or made online at www.wualumni.org/givenow.
