Walter "Walt" F. Wofford, 90, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, November 13, 2022 after a long battle of Parkinson ’s disease.

He was born April 28, 1932, in Hallowell, Kansas, the son of Ermil and Eva (Smith) Wofford. He graduated from Columbus High School. Walt was drafted into the United States Army serving in Korea.

Walt was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad as a Freight Car Foreman for 35 years.

He was a member of First Christian Church- Disciples of Christ, previous member of Highland Heights Christian Church, serving as a Deacon, Santa Fe Retirees Club, serving as President and a member of the VFW Phillip Billard Post 1650 serving on the Funeral Detail for 23 years for over 500 funerals in the Topeka Community.

Walt married Jo Anne Wofford on April 6, 1953 in Bentonville, AR. They welcomed three children, Kathy, Mark and Gayle. He was active in the childrens school activities, was a Boy Scout leader and coached baseball. Walt and Jo Anne enjoyed camping and fishing, square dancing and playing cards with friends. They also traveled to all 50 states.

He enjoyed tinkering and was a very accomplished carpenter, hunting and going to different train events. Walt didn't know a stranger and loved helping people in need. He volunteered at his church and would help neighbors.

Walt is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jo Anne Wofford; children, Kathy Jo Wofford and Gayle (David) Steinbach; grandchildren, Sara (Tyler) Pound, Leah (Andrew) Pound- Gailbraith, Mitchell Wofford, Erica (Aaron) Crume and Stephanie (Alex) Laubengayer and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Alan Wofford; parents and siblings Thelma Thiele and Carl Wofford.

A Funeral Ceremony will be 3:00 pm., Monday, November 21, 2022 at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. Walt’s family will greet relatives and friends at 2:00pm. Cremation will follow the service and a graveside service will take place at a later date in Hallowell, KS.
