Mary Louise (Verink) Patterson, 97, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2022.

She was born August 4, 1924, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Ellis Daniel and Phoebe Elizabeth (Smith) Verink.

She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942 and went on to attend the University of Nebraska and obtained her Bachelors of Science in Education in 1945.

Mary was a school teacher for 6 years. She was a very involved woman. She was volunteer of the year for the Junior League of Topeka, past President of the Topeka Bar Auxiliary, past President and Board Member of the Stormont Vail Auxiliary, Chair and Organizer of the Kansas Judicial Center Docent Program for five years and past President of Chapter HG P.E.O. , past President of the Cooperation Board of the Topeka P.E.O. and she volunteered at the Stormont Vail gift shop for over 40 years.

She had a strong faith and was an active member with First Presbyterian Church. She was a Deacon, Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and committee member and sang in the choir for over 50 years.

Mary took pride in raising her two children and being a stay at home mom and will be remembered for her kindness and genuine smile. Mary never met a stranger. She was the person to always ask about your day and offer a hug.

Mary married Donald Patterson on August 10, 1947 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He preceded her in death on February 10, 2020. Survivors include her daughter, Nancy (Bruce) Chapman; grandchildren, Joshua (Nikki), Jason, Heather (Brian), Jared, Jacob (Josie), and Brenna; great grandchildren; Hayleigh, Aiden, Isabella, Rosaliegh, Ella, Sophia, Noah, and William and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Patterson; son, Bruce Donald Patterson, and brothers, Ellis Verink and Frederick Verink

A Funeral Ceremony will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church, 817 SW Harrison St., Topeka. The family will greet friends an hour prior to the service. Private burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
