Steven Joseph Hinton “Cowboy for Jesus”, died peacefully the morning of June 7, 2022 in Topeka, Kansas. Steven was born July 15, 1950 in Hoisington, Kansas to Joseph and Inez (Brooks) Hinton.

Services with military honors will be held Friday, July 8, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at First Church of the Nazarene, 1001 SW Buchanan Street, Topeka, KS 66604. Livestream can be found at tfnaz.org.

Steven grew up and graduated from high school in Ottawa, Kansas with the “Class of 68”.

Steven served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1970 – 1973 as a Radio Analyst.

Steven retired from the V.A. in Topeka in 2008 where he worked as a custodian.

For many years, Steve’s mission was reaching homeless vets and helping them and others to reach sobriety through AA and the gospel (thus his nickname). He was known for his one liners that were thought provoking and for the love he showed everyone unconditionally.

Steven celebrated 37 years of sobriety on 7/15/2021.

Steven is survived by one daughter, Kathlene Peyton, four nieces and one nephew and their families. He is preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Rosella Hinton, Lucille Williams, and Juanita Kilborn, as well as Steven’s “other brother”, Steve Greer.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Topeka Rescue Mission 600 N Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66608 or to the Salvation Army 1320 SE 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66607.
