Vernon Lee Marcotte, 88, of Topeka, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 7, 2022.

He was born August 13, 1933, in Oakley, Kansas, the oldest son of Archie and Aermine (Bechard) Marcotte. He was one of 14 children. Vernon graduated from Wilson High School in Wilson, Kansas, where he excelled at sports, especially football and basketball.

After graduation, he worked in the oil fields around Russell, Kansas, and served in the United States Army National Guard from 1953 to 1960. During his service, Vernon received the Good Conduct Medal and the Distinguished Unit Badge.

Vernon married Sherrill Heffel on July 17, 1954, in Dorrance, Kansas. Early in their life together, they purchased a small farm in Enterprise, Kansas. To their union in marriage, they welcomed 11 children. In 1978, Vernon and Sherrill purchased a farm in Eskridge, Kansas, where Vernon raised livestock and produced crops for more than 40 years.

He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and enjoyed spending time with them. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Vernon leaves behind his wife of nearly 68 years; children, Brant Marcotte (Renita), Rhonda Gill, Mona Marcotte, Laureen Maxwell (Darrell), Shelley Urban (Daryle), Richard Marcotte (Tammy), Monica Bandlow (Dan), Amy Palmer, and Tracey McGann (Ray); 22 grandchildren; and many great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; and two children, Randall Scott Marcotte and Jana Lynne Marcotte.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 13, 2022, at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Enterprise, Kansas. In Vernon’s honor, memorial contributions may be made to Soldiers’ Angels, 2895 NE Loop 410, Suite 107, San Antonio, TX 78218.
