Phyllis Patricia Evans, 82, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, November 16, 2021.

She was born September 25, 1939, in Leavenworth, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence and Cloviss (Winkelman) Curtiss.
She graduated from Lansing High School in 1957 and received her bachelor's degree in Education from Emporia State University in 1963. In 1970, she received her Master of Education from Washburn University and in 1980 earned full certification in Gifted Education from Emporia State University.

Like many in her family, Phyllis became a teacher. She taught briefly in Olathe, where the principal nominated her for Olathe's Outstanding Young Educator Award. She then taught in Riley, Kansas, where she served as president of the Riley County Teachers Association and during her time there, she was able to earn her master's degree from Washburn University. Most of her career she taught at Shawnee Heights Elementary School. In 1977, the district started a gifted program and Phyllis was awarded the elementary position. She and the administration spent a semester designing the elementary gifted program and starting a resource room of materials.

Phyllis was a member of the Grace Episcopal Cathedral and was active with several organizations including, Sigma Kappa Sorority, serving as a past secretary, Kansas Gifted, Talented and Creative Association, Kappa Delta Pi, Pi Lambda Theta, National Education Association, Kansas NEA, Shawnee Heights Education Association and Shawnee Heights and Berryton Parent-Teacher Organization.

Phyllis was the recipient of Riley County Teachers Association Master Teacher, Quill and Scroll Society, Four-Star Thespian, State Medals for Vocal Ensemble, Medals for Academic Achievement, and was an Emporia State Honor Student.
In 1964, she married Timothy Evans. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Glenn "Dallas" Curtiss.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30pm Friday, December 3, 2021 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, followed by inurnment at Grace Cathedral Columbarium.
