Doris Jo Hedberg, loving wife and mother, musician, teacher and civic leader, 96, of Topeka, passed away Monday, August 23, 2021.

She was born October 26, 1924 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond Peter and Mary (Morgan) Heck. She was a graduate of Topeka High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Washburn University.

A lifelong musician, she sang in many groups including The Topeka Symphony Chorus for 31 years. Up until her death, she was a member of the Shawnee Choral Society and the choir of her church, First United Methodist Church. There, she led the children’s choir program for 26 years. She also taught piano and voice lessons.

Doris served on the boards of the Sunflower Music Festival and the Topeka Symphony. She was the Executive Secretary of the Community Concert Association for 17 years.

She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Nonoso and the P.E.O. Chapter DF in Topeka.

Doris married Dr. Floyd "Doc" Carl Hedberg on June 27, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas. He preceded her in death on July 30, 1995. Survivors include her daughter, Candus Hedberg of Princeton, NJ; her son, Kevin (Sherri) Hedberg of Topeka; two grandchildren, Tracy Hedberg of Seoul, South Korea and Trevor Hedberg of Columbus, OH; and sister-in-law, Connie (Mike) Laughon of Topeka.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Lois Gibson.

An ardent and skilled bridge player, Doris played most of her final games with friends at Brewster Place.

Due to pandemic considerations, a private graveside service will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions in Topeka is assisting the family.
