She was born May 4, 1947, in Herington, Kansas, the daughter of Harold Lee and Thelma May (Walmer) Ward. She received a Technical Certificate to become a legal secretary for from Brown Mackie Technical College in Salina, Kansas.
Karen was a legal assistant who loved her career and dedicated over 40 years of service to the McCullough, Wareheim, and LaBunker Law Firm in Topeka, Kansas. The staff became family to her and she enjoyed the relationships she built with their clients and other professionals within the state.
She enjoyed being outdoors and working in her flower garden, putting puzzles together, and meeting friends every morning for breakfast. The old and new friends she made would become known as the “Breakfast Club”.
Karen married Frank Newmann on March 1, 1967 in Manhattan, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2013. Survivors include her dear friends, Beth Mathews, Harold Friess and John Ostrowski.
A Graveside Service will be 10:00am., Thursday, July 8, 2021 at the Herington Cemetery in Herington, Kansas. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 from 5:00pm- 7:00pm at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
