Rev. Dr. Monte Gravenstein, 85, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, June 29, 2021.

He was born March 18, 1936, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Philip and Lucille (Bass) Gravenstein.

In 1954, he graduated from Topeka High School and went on to graduate from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma, and earning his Masters and Doctorate from TCU at Brite Divinity School.

He met his beautiful bride in 1956 and on December 21, 1958, he married Dorothy Stead in Baxter Springs, Kansas.

They had several pastorates in the Christian Church Disciples of Christ including Fredonia, Kansas; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Independence, Kansas; Leavenworth, Kansas, Wichita, Kansas, and Baton Rouge Louisiana. He started his own business in psychiatric therapy for nursing home patients and he later had a business that provided multi-specialty clinics for seniors.

After retirement, he served in several interims with the Christian Church. He was a member of Community Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Kansas City, Missouri.

Survivors include his wife of 62.5 years, Dorothy; children, Pam Stead, Mark Gravenstein, and Gayle Brunson; three grandchildren, Laurie Stead, Morgan Stead, and Cayla (Adam) Record; and two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Harper Record.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Rev. Dr. Gravenstein had quite the sense of humor, he would tell people he liked to fish, but actually never went. He loved baseball and when he was younger, he was the bat boy for the Topeka Owls. He also enjoyed reading.

Visitation will begin at 9:30am, followed by Masonic Rites at 10:30 am. Funeral services will begin 11am on Monday, July 5, 2021 all at First Christian Church Leavenworth,130 N 6th St, Leavenworth, KS. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
