Harlan Leslie Sweeten, 91, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

He was born August 6, 1929, in Daykin, Nebraska, the son of Sydney L. and Elsie Erma (Peterson) Sweeten. He attended Hastings High School and graduated in 1948. After graduating, he joined the Army with his lifelong friend, Weir John.

Harlan was employed by Patchen Electric Company in Lawrence, Kansas until his retirement after over 50 years.

He was a member of the Maranatha Baptist Fellowship, of Topeka. He enjoyed attending their bible studies and Sunday school. Harlan was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and AARP.

Harlan enjoyed fishing, going to the shooting range, using his telescope at home and watching the stars, deer and elk hunting on trips to Wyoming, and loved traveling with his wife to the Blue Ridge Mountains, Grand Teton, and Yellowstone National Parks.

He married Marilyn Jean Hardy on August 21, 1959 in Tonganoxie, Kansas. She preceded him in death on February 26, 2019 in Topeka, Kansas. Survivors include his daughters, Rosana L. Sweeten of Topeka, Kansas and Donna J. Sweeten-Raymond of Blaine, Minnesota, grandson, Joshua A. (Amy) Buchholz of Virginia; granddaughter, Camille M. Buchholz of Minnesota; great grandchildren, Parker Kittleson and Payton Buchholz; and a sister, Janice Buckley of Hastings, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Jalaene Parkison, Melvin Sweeten, Allan Sweeten, and Carol Gavin; as well as son in-law, Terry Raymond.

Honoring Harlan’s wishes, cremation is planned. A Celebration of Life will be on Saturday, June 19 2021 at the Union Pacific Depot, 402 N. 2nd Street, Lawrence, Kansas 66044, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka VA Hospital Home Health Services.
