Dorothy “Dottie” Sova Richard, 91, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020.

She was born June 23, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Theodore and Genieve (Weber) Foster. She was raised by her grandparents from the age of three. She graduated from St. Ritas Catholic High School in Detroit, MI.

Dottie was co-owner of the first two Denny's Restaurant franchises in Topeka, Kansas in the early 1970's. Later she worked as a secretary for the State of Kansas Revenue Department. She retired in 1996.

Dorothy was creative and artistic. She enjoyed ceramics, arts, crafts, and painting. She was a seamstress. She also enjoyed the great outdoors. Some of her favorite outdoor hobbies include gardening, working in the yard, swimming, and water skiing. Dorothy was also an avid bowler.

Dottie was a member of the Red Hat Society of Topeka, Kansas, the VFW Axillary Women’s Club, and AARP.
She married Leonard Sova and they had three children: Bonnie Sova and David Sova, Topeka; and an infant son, Leonard Sova, Jr. They later divorced. She remarried Donald D. Richard in February 1947.

Survivors include her daughter, Bonnie Sova; son, David Sova; step daughter, Bev (Tom) Kennedy; grandchildren, Jamie Sova, Cory Sova, Sara Sova, Kim Jenkins, Brian Massek, Shan Anderson, Erick Anderson, Dustin Kennedy, and Mike Kennedy; four great-grandchildren, Naliya, Kasius, Guicho, and Hadlie; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Husband, Donald D. Richard, her parents, son, Leonard Sova, Jr; step daughter, Pam Intelhouse; and her sister Loretto Rizzo.

Honoring Dorothy's wishes cremation is planned. A memorial ceremony will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date. In leau of flowers, the family asks that you send memorial contributions to Helping Hands Humane Society 5720 SW 21st, Topeka, KS, 66604-3720 or Wounded Warrior Project P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas, 66675-8517.
