Dr. Richard Maxfield passed away suddenly at home on October 17, 2018 in Topeka, KS. He was born in Mineola, NY on September 12, 1946 to Ruth Blank Maxfield and Edwin Maxfield. He will be remembered as a well-respected psychologist, a devoted husband to his wife of 33 years Susan, and a beloved father to his daughter Amelia and son Jacob. He was adored by his grandsons, and cherished as a son, brother, uncle and friend. Above all Dr. Maxfield was a helper and a listener. It is his continued devotion to working and living in the service of others for which he will be remembered most.
Dr. Maxfield was raised on Long Island, NY and received his Doctorate in Psychology from Adelphi University. He moved to Topeka in 1975 to join the Menninger Clinic as a Post-Doctoral Fellow. He was the Chief Psychologist in the Adult Outpatient Department for six years. He left Menninger to open a private practice, which he ran for 28 years. He also worked for Disability Determination Services and Vocational Rehabilitation Services. Dr. Maxfield was a founding member, and past President, of the Kansas Psychological Association, and a Fellow in the American Psychological Association. He served on the Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board. His work as a psychologist defined his life. Dr. Maxfield found joy in being useful to people. He said a good day was one in which he helped someone.
As a father and a husband Richard was loving, steadfast, and giving. He met his wife Susan at the Menninger Clinic and together they shared a dedication to their children and to the Topeka community. He adored his children and to his core was devoted to the wellbeing of his family. That dedication led him to be the president of the Topeka Swim Association, and to coach his son’s t-ball and soccer teams. His greatest joys were watching the Jayhawks with his daughter, taking long walks along Lake Michigan with his wife, and teaching his grandsons multiplication and how to ride bikes.
Richard made Topeka his home. He said that Topeka was good to him and he wanted to be good to it in return. He took pride in renovating his home, and spent most weekends in his yard. Richard came to love the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center and all it represented to the community. He was a generous donor and a frequent volunteer.
In the last few years Richard spent much of his time in Door County, Wisconsin. He loved being near the water, hiking, and exploring Lake Michigan. The lake reminded him of his boyhood on Long Island, and there he felt free.
Richard is survived by his wife Susan (Voorhees), his daughter Amelia, his son Jacob, his grandsons Ian and Kai, his mother Ruth, sister Donna (Chimera), his brother James and his loving nieces, nephews, brother and sisters-in-law, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Edwin.
A public memorial service will be held on November 11, 2018 at the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center at 10:00 a.m. Donations can be made to the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in his name (www.kansasdiscovery.org).
