He was born on February 26, 1950 to Joe and Nadine Burgardt Gilbert.
He grew up in Tecumseh, KS and graduated from Shawnee Heights High School in 1968.
Following his education he enlisted in the United States Army. As a member of the 101st Airborne Division he was a helicopter pilot and served in Vietnam where he received two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Years later he also attended Army Recruiting School and became a recruiter in Topeka.
In his later years he became disabled as a result of his military service.
In 1980 he married Jacque Gilbert. They divorced in 1997. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Gilbert and Maelynda Ward; siblings, Deana Burgardt, Ronald Burgardt, and Carl Burgardt; as well as six grandchildren.
Bob enjoyed playing pool, fishing, and knife-making.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Burial with military honors will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
