Martha Jean Sims Largent

Martha Jean Largent, 84, Topeka, died Monday, January 19, 2015 at her home. She was born December 9, 1930, in Mount Kisco, New York, youngest of four children born to John Homer and Pocahontas (Smick) Sims.

Marty graduated from Franklin Delano Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, New York in 1949. She served in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC) from 1949-1951, and obtained the rank of Corporal.

She met and married her husband of 55 years, Buddy G. Largent, at Fort Riley. After three weeks of marriage, Buddy was transferred to Korea for the Korean Conflict and Marty transferred to Heidelberg, Germany. They were re-united in 1952.

Marty was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and three siblings: Melvin E. Sims, John H. Sims, Jr., and Mary L. Connelly.

Surviving are two daughters: Gayle J. Carver (Jack) and Sharon A. Rice (LeRoy); six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, January 26, 2015, at Mount Hope Cemetery and Mausoleum Chapel, 4700 SW Seventeenth Street. Private interment of cremains will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Chapel one hour prior to service time.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606-2800 or St. Jude’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
