Gertrude E. Dyck, 91, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, January 17, 2015.

She was born May 12, 1923 in Plattsmouth, NE, the daughter of Dr. Walter Hugo and Elsbeth Hedwig (Roessler) Hohmann. She attended Newton High School, Newton, KS. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in music from Bethel College, North Newton, KS and her Master’s Degree in Music from Northwestern College, Chicago, IL.

Mrs. Dyck taught voice lessons, and was also Choir Director at Central Congregational Church, Topeka.

She was a member of Central Congregational Church, and later a member of First Congregational Church, Minerva Club and AAUW in Topeka.

Gertrude married Marvin Gustav Dyck on April 9, 1949 in the Mennonite Church of North Newton, KS. He preceded her in death on January 26, 2012. Survivors include a daughter, Elsbeth “Beth” Schafer and husband, Todd; two granddaughters, Elizabeth Edwina Schafer and Anne Marie Schafer, all of Topeka; her brother, Dr. Rupert Hohmann, North Newton, KS; several nieces and nephews; and her Siamese cat, Buddah.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Randalin A. Bargdill.

Gertrude enjoyed music, gardening and antiques. She and Marvin also enjoyed traveling extensively with James and Shirley Lewis.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, January 24, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave, Topeka.
