In Memory Of
Marcella Compton Vincent Hillmer
1919 - 2014

A precious child of God has returned to her home with her Heavenly Father. Marcella Vincent Hillmer died on October 20, 2014, surrounded by her large, loving family. Cora Marcella was born June 27, 1919, at the Valley Falls home of her parents, Isaac N. and Lydia Marcellus Compton. She had one step-brother, Sidney Compton. Marcye’s father died when she was six years old, leaving her mother to provide for both of them. Their faith in God sustained them through many difficult years.

Marcye married Austin C. Vincent in 1940. She earned a sociology degree from Baker University in 1942. She was a scholarship student who worked in the Dean’s Office for thirty cents an hour. The couple was blessed with three children: Jennifer Heillman of Shawnee; Meredith Porter (Michael) of Lawrence; and Kent (Christy) Vincent of Topeka. She doted on her 15 grandchildren and her 23 great-grandchildren. She was an active member of Country Club United Methodist Church in Kansas City for over 50 years.

In 1990, she married Walter Klein Hillmer, an old family friend. With their union, Marcye acquired a second son, Walter Knox Hillmer (Joyce) of Topeka. The newlyweds settled in Topeka, where they attended Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and enjoyed retirement together. Mr. Hillmer died in 2001. Marcye later joined Grace Point Church in Topeka.

Marcye was preceded in death by her parents, step-brother, and both of her husbands. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her brother and sister-in-law Fielding and Flossie Fromberg, and seven nieces and nephews. The family would like to express its gratitude for the care she has received at Atria Hearthstone Senior Living Center and to St. Jude Hospice Care.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 22, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka. A celebration of her homecoming will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday at Topeka Bible Church, 1101 SW Mulvane, Topeka. Marcye asked that memorial donations be directed to the Haiti Lifeline Ministries, P.O. Box 4068, Topeka, Kansas 66604 (www.haitilifeline.org) or Topeka Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 8350, Topeka, Kansas 66608 (trmonline.org).
